First of all, it is easy to get around without the help of a guide using taxis and the subway. All you need is an updated map with Chinese and Latin characters as well as the name and address where you are heading in Chinese characters. Just ask the concierge at your hotel to write down the name and address of where you want to go in Chinese characters. We had a lot of fun running across the city. The only downside has been the occasionally very heavy traffic on the way back.
