If you have time to visit Hangzhou and its attractions such as the famous West Lake about 190 km from
Shanghai you should definitely go for it.
We did a one-day visit and it was a packed day considering the heavy traffic over the weekend. But, we managed to see all the highlights we wanted to see such as the Longjing green tea village and plantations where they grow the famous Dragon Well tea (= Longjing green tea), the Buddhist Monastery Ling Yin and the nearby Feilai Feng Buddha Carvings, the residence of Hu Xueyan in Hangzhou’s historic city center and last but not least the famous West Lake itself.
Hangzhou is (besides Suzhou) considered to be the paradise on earth by Chinese and inspired poets and artists for centuries. And we can exactly see why after spending the day there.
You can easily spend a couple of days in Hangzhou to enjoy the scenery and to take full benefit of all the things to do and see there. But, like we said above, we also managed to see a lot in just one day. It very much depends on your own preferences. If you have only one day so be it. It should not hold you back!
In terms of food you should give the 150 year old institution Louwailou a try. We usually do not like touristy spots but we were not disappointed. The location overlooking the West Lake is great and we could even sit on the terrace to enjoy the spectacular view. But more importantly, both the famous Hangzhou Beggar’s chicken and the Dongpo pork (=braised pork) were delicious. We would definitely go back.
But go and see for yourself. Enjoy!
